IAEA managing director announces month-long extension of Iran agreement

London, May 24, IRNA – Managing Director of the UN nuclear watchdog, IAEA, Rafael Grossi said in a press conference in Vienna on Monday that Iran-IAEA three-month agreement on continuation of IAEA cameras’ functioning and verification has been extended for another month, till July 24.

Grossi initially apologized due to the day-long delay in holding the press conference that was scheduled to be held yesterday, adding that during the comprehensive talks he had with the Head of Iran Nuclear Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi the past winter three-month agreement has been extended for another month as of today.

The two sides reached agreement that the inspections and justification that were agreed on in March, 2020, for there months will continue till July 24 and the collected information by the agency in various Iranian nuclear sites will be preserved till then.

***Extension of agreement with Iran more important than initial agreement

The IAEA managing director said if reaching agreement with Iran last winter was important, its extension now, keeping in mind Iran’s remunerative steps in the framework of the JCPOA is even more important.

Although since February 2020 many qualitative and quantitative activities have taken place in Iran, except the general parameters that I presented in our joint February communique, we have many technical documents in which there are details on the places in which were set up our cameras, the flowmeters, and the online electrical systems to record the enrichment in those places, he said.

This agreement is a temporary solution to prevent the elimination of the recorded information on Iran’s nuclear activities, he added, saying that according to the Iran-IAEA previous agreement the cameras’ information had to be deleted today, but this will not happen for a month according to our new agreement.
